Sensory/Perception
Definition: The process of recognition and interpretation of environmental stimuli.
Exemplars: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration

- Discuss safety issues and the nursing care required for patients with alterations in sensory perception functions.
Objectives:
- Discuss the physiological process of sensory perception.
- Discuss factors that affect normal sensory function.
- Identify the manifestations that may occur as a result of sensory deficits, sensory deprivation or sensory overload.
- Describe the nursing interventions needed to care for patients with sensory deficits, sensory deprivation or sensory overload.
- Apply the nursing process for individuals with the exemplars of glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Develop a teaching plan for individuals undergoing eye examination and testing.
- Identify potential complications that can occur with eye surgery.
- Discuss discharge instructions that need to be discussed following eye surgery.
