6 Pharmacology

Objectives:

  1. Discuss pharmacokinetic principles of drug action: absorption, distribution, metabolism,
    and excretion.
  2. Discuss the pharmacodynamics phase of pharmacology using appropriate terminology, including drug action, therapeutic effects and side effects, adverse reactions, toxic effects.
  3. Explain therapeutic range of drug action.
  4. Describe factors that influence drug action.
  5. Differentiate between therapeutic effects and adverse effects.
  6. Define terms related to side effects, adverse reactions and toxic effects of drugs.
  7. Discuss classifications of drugs.
  8. Describe how drugs are named, generic vs. trade.
  9. Discuss health law aspects and nursing interventions required for administration of controlled substances.
  10. Discuss information necessary in preparation of drug cards.
  11. Describe the effects of drugs on food and nutrients and the effects of food and nutrients on drugs.
