Sensory/Perception

Definition: The process of recognition and interpretation of environmental stimuli.

 

Exemplars: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss safety issues and the nursing care required for patients with alterations in sensory perception functions.

 

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the physiological process of sensory perception.
  2. Discuss factors that affect normal sensory function.
  3. Identify the manifestations that may occur as a result of sensory deficits, sensory deprivation or sensory overload.
  4. Describe the nursing interventions needed to care for patients with sensory deficits, sensory deprivation or sensory overload.
  5. Apply the nursing process for individuals with the exemplars of glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
  6. Develop a teaching plan for individuals undergoing eye examination and testing.
  7. Identify potential complications that can occur with eye surgery.
  8. Discuss discharge instructions that need to be discussed following eye surgery.
